Tinjan has always been a border town. Attinianum protected Poreč's borders from the peninsula inland and monitored the entrance to Tarsatica during the time of the Romans. It was one of the main pillars of Majnard Črnogradski's assets in Pazin throughout the Middle Ages, along with the Pazin castle, which was acquired via a wedding connection under the rule of the Gorica rulers.
